Congratulations again to our RHS Alumnus Dr. Patrick Yung for winning the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons 2009”!

On one chilled and quiet Saturday morning of January 2010, the RHS football court was lit up with a number of keyed up RHS Alumni, who came all the way back to their alma mater for catching up with their old schoolmate, Dr. Patrick Yung – the winner of the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons 2009”. Father Francisco also showed up and gave them a warm welcome and his congratulations to Dr. Yung. The old schoolmates then began to warm up by a few rounds of Dr. Yung’s favorite football game. While the beaming sun started to radiate, the jazzed up team took a break and started to share the tidbits and photos of the old school days. All these led to a perfect and cheerful kickoff for this issue’s Rosarian’s Interview with Dr. Patrick Yung.

An Absolute Rosarian

Dr. Yung studied at RHS since 1974 from Kindergarten to Primary and Secondary School up to From 7 in 1989 - an absolute Rosarian indeed. He then went to Medical School at CUHK and specialized in Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 1995 and further expertized in the field of Orthopaedics Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery since 2000. Currently he is the Consultant & Team Head in the Division of Orthopaedics Sports Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in the Prince of Wales Hospital; the President of the Hong Kong Association of Sports Medicine & Sports Science; and also the Deputy Director of Hong Kong Jockey Club Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre. He is also the team doctor for the Hong Kong Football Association supporting the team medically in various matches. He has been awarded the prize of "Ten Outstanding Young Persons" of Hong Kong in 2009, in recognition of his contribution to the communities and his professions. This is indeed very encouraging news to all Rosarians - A big round of applause again to Dr. Yung!

His dedicated love – Football!

From the many titles of Dr. Yung as stated above, our readers can probably tell his specialized focus - Sports Medicine. In fact he is also a definite sportsman himself, and an especially dedicated one in football. His passion for football has been seeded since his days in RHS. He joined not only the school football team but also some youth team outside RHS. He was also the school football team captain and led them to the winning of the inter-school champion when he was in Form 5. Plentiful of happy and unforgettable memories came from the RHS football fields. School lunch hours were always exchanged for football practice or matches and “comboed” with empty roaring tummy and body all soaked in sweat afterwards. His nose was once broken in a school match. When he was taken to the hospital, the doctor fixed his nose merely with a big clumsy clamp without anesthesia! Dr. Yung still recalled visibly the deadly unbearable pain! Even nowadays Dr. Yung still keeps in touch with his childhood footie mates and plays regularly in different teams like the CU Old Students’ Association, “Friends of Shatin”- a group formed by him and some retired professional players, and has frequent friendly matches with the HK Police Force team. Like father like son, Dr. Yung’s son, now at Primary 1 only, is already very much into football and gets ever so excited each time when his father brings him to see the live local matches!

His destined path from RHS to Medicine and Orthopaedics

Like most students, Dr. Yung was unsure of his career path when at school. Yet becoming a doctor was like a path destined for him and his life could have been a complete different one if he has made several slightly different choices at different stages at RHS.  When he was in Form 5, he applied for early university acceptance for Biochemistry and was accepted. But he chose to continue his secondary school study instead according to his brother’s advice. When he was in From 6, he picked Biology and an extra self–study subject on Chinese Studies simply following his first girlfriend. Upon completion of Form 7, on the day when the A-level result was out, triggered by a half mocking joke by a close classmate (“Hey Patrick, you should stake your application for Medicine with such results!”), Dr. Yung applied for CUHK for Medicine with the two prerequisite subjects taken “coincidently”. After two rounds of interview, Dr. Yung actually got accepted! And here came another decision point - He actually got accepted by HKU for Dental Study and also PolyU for Accounting and he opted to go for Accounting with a schoolmate. But his brother came into the scene again and at the end Dr. Yung picked CUHK for Medicine accordingly. Dr. Yung has been at ease with his university life and enjoyed much of it. He was also in the school football team and his zeal for football was everlasting. Unfortunately in 1991, his knee’s cruciate ligament was broken in a football match when he represented the University team for Hong Kong against that of GuangZhou’s. Since then, he became a frequent visitor to the Prince of Wales Hospital for his knee treatment as he insisted to continue the vigorous football exercise which the knee in fact could not afford and resulted in recurrent injuries. Upon graduation of undergraduate school, he finally had an operation on it. He was then hospitalized for a quite long period and got mingled well with the whole Orthopaedics department at the hospital. Subsequently when it was time to pick his subject for specialization, Orthopaedics was the natural choice without hesitation!

His enlightener – Mr. Damen Chan

Dr. Yung remembered vividly two occasions at RHS where Mr. Damen Chan has “enlightened” him profoundly. The first one happened on the first day of school in Form 2. While he was on his way back to campus in the school bus, Mr. Chan suddenly popped up sitting next to him and asked about his preparation for the year. Dr. Yung’s mind was a complete blank and Mr. Chan invited him to be monitor of the class. Since then, Dr. Yung became more attentive to his schoolwork and has advanced considerably. The role as monitor was like a positive reinforcement and recognition to him as others’ role model. He actually became the class monitor straight from Form 2 to Form 7!

The second one took place in Form 6 when Dr. Yung was fondly, sweetly and busily in love with his girlfriend of that time. One day after school he was grabbed by rather stern looking Mr. Chan to a corner and asked if he was dating with someone. Dr. Yung was expecting a harsh lesson or even some threatening nagging to stop dating. But to his utmost surprise, Mr. Chan actually taught him about time management on both love and schoolwork! And it proved Mr. Chan’s teaching worked as Dr. Yung did put into good practice ever since after. Indeed Mr. Chan has inspired Dr. Yung in many ways for being an upright man.

His aspirations in Sports Medicine

Dr. Yung’s winning of the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons 2009” was attributed to his contribution to Sports Medicine in Hong Kong and internationally. But he stressed that the accomplishment was an explicit result of teamwork and the award should belong to his whole team and also all those in Sports Medicine field in HK. They should be acknowledged for their endeavoring behind the stage all along. Yet pitifully the resources available in this field have been awfully limited and their efforts have not been properly appreciated much in the past. Hence he hopes this prize will help lead to a higher awareness from the public on Sports Medicine and ultimately more decent Government’s investment and direct support in all ways. He aspires that the standard of Sports Medicine in HK will catch up in short while with those leading countries like England and Italy, primarily in football and eventually to all sports domains. Likewise in order to demonstrate Hong Kong’s capability to campaign for worldwide sports event like the Asian Games, it is essential to have a competent Sports Medicine support with international ranking level. Dr. Yung also pointed out that in fact Hong Kong is already well-equipped with expertise in the field bu
